Tell us about your background. When did you first discover drag?

I first discovered drag when I was 16. I snuck into my first gay bar, UBU, with a fake ID. It was there that I saw my first drag queen, Aaron Davis. And that bitch was FABU-LOUS!! She is the only queen, to this day, that I have seen do a back handspring in 4inch heels. She let me film her getting into drag for a public broadcasting show and we became really good friends. And that’s all she wrote!

As a woman, were you intimidated by the drag queens? Did you feel welcome as a faux queen?

I don’t think I was ever intimidated, per se . . . I think I was more respectful. I didn’t want queens to think that I was trying to appropriate their art that has such a complex historical context to our LGBT community; I wanted to celebrate in the beauty of the art form with them. I was lucky in the sense that I came into the drag scene in Dallas organically. By that I mean I was choreographing and back-up dancing for pageant queens so I was already known in the drag community. The first time I took the stage as a faux queen I was more nervous about the audience’s reaction as opposed to any queens.

In the sprit of RuPaul, we have to know: Are you more of a pageant queen or a comedy queen?

I’M A TOTAL PAGEANT QUEEN!!! I soooo appreciate comedy and camp, but that’s totally not my thing (and I’m not really good at it. Think Alyssa Edwards but WAY WORSE, lol!).

What drew you to RuPaul’s Drag Race and Drag U? Does that show represents queendom as you have experienced it?

I love ALL things drag so anytime anything related comes out I’m always the first one in line to check it out. I think Drag Race is a very hyper version of what drag is. While there is some truth to the way that drag is represented, all the queens are put in a very heightened non-reality version of drag. I mean you’re never going to get a group of queens to share workroom space and not cut a bitch unless you’re on TV. I think Drag U is such an interesting concept and while I think every girl needs to drag herself out at least once in her life, drag is SO much more than just make-up, a wig, and fierce outfit

How do YOU prep for a performance? Details, please!

With LOTS of ALCOHOL! LOL, j/k . . . Maybe.

I do a lot of mental preparation. I’m a big visualizer so I visualize what I want to look like on stage from head to toe and hopefully I will manifest on stage in that form. It takes me about an 1 hour to 1 ½ hours to paint my mug and I’m always listening to music—I really try to perfect the mug because my entire illusion is centered on dragging out my face. I pull, tuck, tape, and corset everything else into place, grab a Don Julio and pineapple, and start werking the room!

We have to know, Brandi — what is your favorite corset to perform in?

Well seeing as how I’m more of a juicy girl, I cannot live without my Raja Gemini Underbust corset!! I mean it IS named after the queen of all queens Raja so you KNOW it’s got to be flawless! It hugs and accentuates my curves to PERFECTION! It a MUST HAVE for any queen!
